What is a Navy Pea Coat?

Information on Navy Pea Coats

A Navy pea coat is a heavy coat that is normally made from wool. It can normally be seen with its large buttons, vertical pockets, and wide lapels. They are typically double-breasted and the fall at the mid-thigh level.

The idea of a pea coat came from the 18th century, where sailors of European navies would wear them to protect themselves in bad weather. They were originally made from 30-oz wool, and would come in a navy-blue color. Since their debut, they have moved away from being something you see in the military, and more of a fashion statement.

However, it is still possible to get an original, authentic Navy pea coat by purchasing them at military-surplus stores. These still contain the heavy wool, and the color. The more fashionable pea coats contain a lighter wool fabric, and have a wide variety of colors that can be used.

Pea coats used to also be worn by just men who were sailors. Since then, it has become popular among many women, and still sports a similar look to the typical men pea coats. There are only minor differences like which side the buttons are located and how many buttons are on the coat.
